Hidden Stems in BaZi, clearly explained
Each Earthly Branch can contain one or more hidden Heavenly Stems. They show elemental and Ten God relationships held inside the branch rather than displayed above it.
Main, middle and residual qi
The principal hidden stem is usually treated as the branch's main qi. Additional stems have secondary prominence; this site labels the layers rather than presenting them as equal.
Roots
When a hidden stem shares the Day Master's element, readers may describe the Day Master as having a root in that branch. Rooting is evidence, not a complete strength verdict.
Exposure
A hidden stem is exposed when the same stem appears in a visible Heavenly Stem position. Exposure can make a relationship easier to observe without making it automatically favorable.
